Connecting New Zealanders with their land

Te Kakano Aotearoa Trust

Over the past 10 years the Te Kakano Aotearoa Trust has empowered more than 1000 volunteers to take part in community restoration projects around the Wanaka district and upper Clutha area.

The volunteers collect seeds locally, and propagate and grow them in their own community-based native plant nursery. More than 22,000 hours have been spent by volunteers caring for and planting 24,000 plants for various restoration projects.

Working with the local councils, the group also carries out regular pest control on particular local sites.

As well as seeing local biodiversity benefit from the indigenous habitat restoration, the group has empowered the community through education, demonstration and hands-on participation.
