Rimutaka Prison Waste Reduction and Recycling Project

Department of Corrections

Rimutaka Prison is cutting waste through a new programme of action.

The Upper Hutt prison, housing a maximum of 1200 prisoners and nearly 600 staff, ultimately aims to reduce 100% of waste going to landfill.

The recycling and waste reduction programme is already cutting costs and lessening the impact on the environment.

The whole prison community is supporting the programme which has seen 50%, or 77 tonnes, less waste going to landfill in the first three months of operation. Meanwhile about five tonnes of recyclables are recovered each month.

Initiatives have included building compost bins from new and recycled materials, setting up worm farms, building a covered shelter for sorting waste, and keeping staff and inmates informed about the changes.
Planned improvements over the next 12 months are expected to reduce the waste by another 50%.
